My mission was simple. Go out and search the world wide web to find the best bloggers that blog about learning Mandarin Chinese. What kind of blogs? Chinese language blogs that talk about language learning resources, tips for speaking, offer listening practice, etc… There are many blogs about living in China and while these are interesting it doesn’t really help students looking to improve their Chinese. Below is a list of the best Chinese language learning blogs that specifically help students learn Chinese.

…

Laowai Chinese: Tips and Strategies to Learn Chinese

Laowai Chinese covers various different topics related to learning Chinese — vocabulary, resources, and even pronunciation to name a few topics. The blog is well written and maintained by Albert Wolfe. Albert started teaching himself Chinese in July of 2005 and rather than have people learn the lessons he did as he learned he decided to post what he learned on Laowai Chinese. He’s currently working on a book Chinese 24/7 which is a textbook to help students study Chinese without a formal classroom environment.

Beijing Sounds is a Chinese learning blog focused on listening and pronunciation skills related to the Beijing Chinese accent. They have been around for a few years and what’s unique about Beijing Sounds is how they have audio clips of authentic Chinese speakers accompanying many of their posts. They also include pinyin with any Chinese written so beginners won’t be clueless as to what is being said. The blog is authored and edited by the mysterious SYZ.

In the United States when I think of ladies underwear I think of Victoria’s Secret. If you were to ask me to name another store I wouldn’t know how to answer. Victoria’s Secret is a staple in any American mall, men lust over their sexy models, and it seems like every woman loves shopping there. That’s the situation here in the US, but this got me thinking…where do ladies shop for bras and other intimate clothing in other countries? What is the equivalent “Victoria’s Secret” in foreign countries and how do they advertise their product? Armed only with the power of the Internet in this series of posts I set out to find out these answers and embark on the World Bra Tour – an exploration of Bra culture around the world. Today I start off the tour with Germany.

…

How Do You Say “Bra” in German?

I was real excited to get started on my Bra quest, however, the first roadblock I came across in my research is that if you search “German Bra Commercials” in Google you don’t get many good results. The same is true if you search Youtube. I decided to change my approach and search in German. But how do you say “bra” in German?

I headed to Google Translate and entered “bra” and was given the German translation “BH.” Then I learned to say “BH Werbung” (Bra advertisement). I don’t speak any German, but I was curious to see what “bh” actually sound like and thanks to online text-to-speech I was able to find out.

Here I learned what “BH Werbung” sounded like.

Unfortunately “BH Werbung” is not very useful in everyday speech, so here’s a phrase that might be more useful “Ich kann Ihre BH!” (I can see your bra!)

Thanks to my new found knowledge I was able to find much more interesting bra commercials.

…

Bonprix

Click here to view the embedded video.

To be honest this commercial isn’t that exciting. The clip is from their youtube channel, Bonprix FashionTV, where they are advertising and all of their clothing products which also include men, women, and children’s fashion. Turns out Bonprix is one of the largest e-commerce websites in Germany (top 10 according to their translated wiki page). They sell their goods through mail order catalogs, online, and a TV shopping show they have. Their website has this pretty cool feature where you can browse and even download their full catalogs. For those interested in Bonprix’s bra and underwear fashions check out their catalog.

The catalog is pretty interesting. It has page turning animations so as you are browsing you feel like you are viewing a real catalog. If you happen to find a bra that interests you, you can click on it and you’ll be taken to the product information page. More impressively, if you click on the magnifying glass on that page you can zoom-in ultra close on the product and model. I’m assuming the reason you would want to do this is the examine the quality of the material.

…

Lascana

Click here to view the embedded video.

As Lascana’s slogan “It’s a woman’s world” suggests, Lascana is focused solely on women’s fashion. They have stores throughout Germany and seem to be similar to Victoria’s Secret, but perhaps more upscale. In addition to lingerie they also sell swimsuits and “homewear” (which looks like sleepwear to me). Mahret Kupka, a German fashion blogger, did a great write up (originally in German, but translated courtesy of Google) where she toured a Lascana store and snapped some good photos. Below is a video tour She did at one of Lascana’s stores. It seems she was very fascinated by the dressing rooms.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Lascana also has an online catalog so if you are curious you can scope out all the latest Lascana fashions.

Just like Bonprix, Lascana also has their own product super zoom-in feature. It’s a little different, but basically the same idea. Find a product you like and then zoom up way close to check out the quality of the fabric.

Of all the German bra commercials I’ve come across so far , C&A’s seems to be the sexiest. In addition to showcasing not only their bras but also their “strings” (which I assume are panties…) they have some interesting camera angles and shots. Here’s another example of their more racy commercials.

The prices don’t seem so bad considering it’s only 6 euros ($8) for the string (panties), 15 ($20) for the “corsage,” and 12 ($16) for the “BH” (which we all learned earlier is bra in German).

However, it should be noted that these videos are from 2003 so if you take into account inflation it’s probably like million euros now. As you might be able to guess with these kind of prices C&A isn’t going after the high end market (Walmart sells a bra for $19). Similar to Bonprix, C&A sells all kinds of fashion for men, women, and children. They have stores all over Europe, but in 2001 closed down all the stores in the UK due to poor sales. Recently they’ve been trying to reinvent their low budget image by improving the quality and increasing the prices.

You can check out C&A’s bra and underwear fashions by checking out their online catalog.

It’s not as fancy as the other two online catalogs, but they lots of photos and they have their own product super zoom-in feature. I know Walmart for sure doesn’t have this feature.

…

Overall Lessons Learned

The German online bra and underwear browsing and shopping experience is very different from the United States. They take tons of high quality photos of the products and models. They also have very innovative interactive product catalogs. I’m still amazed at how you can zoom so close up to the models. You can see the pores in the skin! Victoria’s Secret seems so boring now.

After featuring foreigners who spoke Chinese really fluently, I decided to look into foreigners who could speak Korean fluently. In my search I came across a KBS (Korean Broadcasting Show) called “미녀들의 수다.” “Global Talk Show” is the official English translation of the show according to KBS, but other English translations include: Talk with beauties, Talking with beauties, a Chat with Beauties, and even the Beauties’ Chatterbox. The premise of the show is quite simple. Get beautiful foreign females who live in Korea and get them together to discuss various topics related to Korea.

The panel of females includes women from such countries as New Zealand, Canada, Peru, Japan, etc…here’s a screenshot from the official 미녀들의 수다 (Global Talk Show) website highlighting some of the female panelists on the show (click on the image to view the full list of panelists):

Wikipedia’s brief description states the Global Talk Show or a Chat with Beauties:

is a television program on Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) in South Korea. The show is a survey of foreign women who reside in South Korea who discuss their experiences and cultures in talk show format. After high viewer ratings from its first broadcast on October 7th, 2006 during the Korean harvest festival holiday, it became a regularly broadcast program starting November 26th, 2006.

Here’s an English guided video tour of 미녀들의 수다 (Global Talk Show):

Click here to view the embedded video.

And here’s a sample portion of the show that someone has subtitled in English (warning some of the English translated is not perfect, but it’s definitely better than nothing):

Click here to view the embedded video.

Apparently the show isn’t without critics as discovered by A Year in Mokpo who found that:

When the show began the women on the panel were mostly old hands, Korea-wise, in particular American Leslie Benson, who’s spent 11 years in Korea and speaks fluent Korean. The show was mostly people who know Korea well telling Koreans about their own country, gently pointing out some of Korea’s less proud aspects, in particular, its sexism.
…
Well after plodding these well-worn boards for a long time, these topics have ceased to be interesting. Anybody out there who watches this program will notice that in an effort to maintain the interest of basically talking about in-your-face old ladies, drinking soju and eating dog meat, they have changed the format from ‘knowledgeable foreigners discuss their experiences in Korea thoughtfully’ to ‘buckwild foreign chicks who don’t know anything about Korea and can barely speak Korean say shocking, uninformed things in barely understandable Korean’

I can’t really comment on the quality of their spoken Korean, but I know the young attractive female beauties of “A Chat with Beauties” are much better than I am, but then again that isn’t saying much!

**Update**

I found some more info the show and these “Beauties.” If you scroll down the page it lists some very basic information on each of the hosts (like what ethnicity they are and their picture). Check it out here.
In my random searching for good or fun Japanese learning materials I came across a website which takes a very unique approach to Japanese learning. It’s called GenkiJapan.net (though for some reason when you get to the site it redirects to GenkiEnglish.net). “Genki” in Japanese means “energetic” or “fun” and “Japan” means Japan the country [...]

In my random searching for good or fun Japanese learning materials I came across a website which takes a very unique approach to Japanese learning. It’s called GenkiJapan.net (though for some reason when you get to the site it redirects to GenkiEnglish.net). “Genki” in Japanese means “energetic” or “fun” and “Japan” means Japan the country (I couldn’t resist). Their approach to beginner Japanese is rather than bore you with lectures their lessons are all in sing-song form. It’s not very advanced Japanese learning but like their website says:

WARNING: One listen and these songs will stick in your head all day.
Luckily the Japanese will stick there too.

You have to see it to believe it. Here’s one example lesson which I think is the most addictive and catchy of them all. For any of you who’ve never studied Japanese let me know if this sticks in your head and you end up learning any Japanese. It’s simply titled “When, Where, Who, What” and it’s also my favorite:

Click here to view the embedded video.

To get started on your genki Japanese learning check out their other genki Japanese songs and games. If only all language learning could have some “genki” injected into it.

Considering my parent’s are immigrants from Taiwan and I’ve been studying Chinese since I was a kid you would think I would be pretty good at Mandarin. However, I suck. While it doesn’t take much to find someone who speaks better Mandarin Chinese than me here are 10 non-native Chinese speakers who rock the language. I was inspired by the Peking Order’s blog post Laowise – China’s top 5 famous foreigners. For anyone who thinks that Chinese is impossible to learn let these guys serve as your inspiration.

10. Hong Lao Wai (Real name unknown)

Hong Lao Wai is an American supposedly self taught Chinese speaker who protects his identity and has a penchant for singing Chinese national pride songs. As you can imagine he’s popular with the Chinese people.

8. Tom Haze (Real name unknown)

I found this guy on youtube under the username tomhaze. His profile says his location is Canada so I’ll assume he’s Canadian. According to his comments he spent 4 years studying Chinese to get to that level. Pretty impressive.

TTS or Text To Speech is the process of converting any written text to spoken speech by way of a computer. In the past the quality of these text to speech tools was pretty bad. It would sound like robots were talking to you instead of humans. However, a lot of progress has been made in the last few years. To give you an idea, I’ve compiled this text to speech video comparison. Some of you may be familiar with the text I used for this comparison.

Click here to view the embedded video.

If you are wondering why I didn’t include the whole Braveheart “Freedom” speech from the movie it’s because some of the tested tools have word or character limits so I couldn’t fit all the text in. Either way, it’s pretty fun to see how far the technology has come along. In the video this is what was demonstrated:

Mac OSX Speech Bruce voice

Oddcast.com Daniel (UK) Voice

Oddcast.com Charles (UK) Voice

acapela-group.com Graham (UK) Voice

acapela-group.com Peter (UK) Voice

Mac OS X Text to Speech

The first TTS tool you see in the video, the one with just text on the screen, is the built in Mac OSX text to speech tool. If you didn’t know, all Macs have the ability to convert text to spoken speech. However, as you can tell the quality is not that good. Also, as of now the Mac TTS only speaks English, so for people learning languages other than English it’s not really a good tool other than to amuse your friends.

Oddcast Text to Speech

The second TTS tool is from a company called Oddcast. They are an interesting company that on top of TTS also have different applications that allow you to do various stuff with media (like upload your picture onto a potato and animate it). What’s unique about Oddcast is that they have an animated avatar (character) that mouths the words as it speaks. This provides even more amusement than just hearing the text alone. The speaking on it is much better especially compared with Mac TTS. It has over 20 languages (Chinese, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, etc…) with over 60 different voices to choose from. English alone has American, UK, Australian, Irish, and Indian voices. If try it out you’ll notice that the avatar’s head will follow your mouse around as you move it. It’s kind of freaky.

Acapela Group TTS

The final demo in the video was Acapela Group’s TTS tool. Out of all the tools compared here I would say this is the best in terms of quality. The speaking is pretty realistic and it’s very straightforward to use. You don’t get the talking heads, as many languages, or the variety of voices, but in terms of sound quality it’s scary how realistic it is. In terms of languages they cover 25 languages with over 50 voices. The only drawback is that they don’t do Asian languages, but they do include the other popular languages like French, German, Spanish, etc…

TTS in Foreign Language Learning

The text to speech tools comparison I showed above was using English, but what about speaking other foreign languages? From my experimenting with French and Spanish using Acapela’s TTS I can say it sounds pretty good as well, however you have to take what I say with a grain of salt since I’m a native English speaker and have very little French and Spanish skills. The best way is for you to evaluate for yourself:

Click here to view the embedded video. Click here to view the embedded video.

Bottom line, I definitely would reccommend using either the Oddcast or Acapela TTS tools in your foreign language study program. First of all it’s FREE. Second of all, it’s very convenient having a tool that can speak any phrase or words you come across, especially more so if you are a beginner who is still grappling with pronuncation for a new language It’s like having a native speaker in your pocket that you can pull out and force it to say whatever you want, whenever you want. Oh yeah, and it’s FREE!
